Discerning Sacred Story through Pilgrimage

Julie Smith, Carolyn Sutton, Karen Hoglund, and the Rev. Sara Ardrey-Graves

Going on pilgrimage is an ancient tradition that draws pilgrims close to God and close to one another. People embark on pilgrimage with different intentions, expecting to be transformed in a way that allows them to acknowledge and live into their sacred stories. Join Julie Smith and Carolyn Sutton to explore how pilgrimage differs from tourism, how we can bring pilgrimage into our daily lives, and how this practice enriches our spirituality. Julie and Carolyn have been on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and have hiked parts of the Camino de Santiago in Spain and Saint Olav’s Way in Norway.

During the first two weeks of this class, join this mother-daughter team to learn about holy expeditions and the connection to ordinary days. In the third week of the class, we welcome Karen Hoglund to teach us about how walking the labyrinth connects to holy journeys and our own inner journey. Karen is a 500-hour registered yoga teacher, working on her 1000-hour yoga therapy certification. She is a long-time member of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church and has used their portable labyrinth many times to teach the benefits of walking meditation. During week four, Sara Ardrey-Graves will join us for a conversation about how spiritual direction can help us bring pilgrimage experiences home and find meaning in our day-to-day lives.
