Window 16: The Church

The Church

Reynolds, Francis & Rhonstock, 1946
Given by John D. Perry, Jr. and Maria B. Perry
Under balcony to north of entrance.

According to architect Ralph Williams Cram’s plan, Windows 18 and 22 are symbolic of the supplanting of the old dispensation by the new.
The female figure represents the Church. She holds the chalice in her right hand and a staff surmounted by a cross in her left. In the pedella the Church is symbolized as the ark, a ship tossed on a stormy sea with all safe within.
Symbols:
Four forms of the cross, including Chi-Rho (lower left), the first two letters of the Greek for Christ.
Fleur-de-lis (Trinity)
