Window 22: The Synagogue

The Synagogue

Reynolds, Francis & Rhonstock, 1946

Under balcony to south of entrance

According to architect Ralph Williams Cram’s plan, Windows 18 and 22 are symbolic of the supplanting of the old dispensation by the new. The blind-folded female figure, with staff broken, crown tumbling, and the inverted tablet with the Ten Commandments, represents the superseding of the Law in the Church. In the pedella is the seven-branched candlestick of the Old Testament with the curtain of the temple rent apart.
