Raphael appears by name only in the deuterocanonical book of Tobit. In Christian tradition he performs all manner of healing. Here he is shown holding a fish, a reference to his healing Tobit with the fish’s gall (Tobit 11:7), and a staff, alluding to the journey he makes with Tobit’s son Tobias (beginning at Tobit 5:4).
