Luke tells the story of John’s birth to Elizabeth, cousin of Jesus’s mother Mary (Luke 1:5-80), and then all four Gospels tell of Jesus’s baptism by John (Matthew 3, Mark 1, Luke 3, and John 1:19f). John was an itinerant preacher who called the people to repentance and a renewal of their covenant relationship with God. He lived in the desert and is usually portrayed in rough clothing.
