The archangel Gabriel is God’s messenger and appears in both the Old and New Testaments. He appears to Daniel (Daniel 8-9), to Zechariah and to Mary, foretelling the births of John the Baptist and Jesus (Luke 1:11-38). Although the trumpeter who announces the return of Jesus and the resurrection of the dead is not identified in the Bible, Gabriel is portrayed as this one in Byzantine art, Milton’s Paradise Lost, and Negro spirituals. He is shown here with a trumpet.
